What are the states with the best and worst life expectancy in the United States?

The highest ranked state for life expectancy in 2019 was Hawaii, with 80.9 years, according to a federal report released Thursday. Mississippi came in last, with a life expectancy of 74.4 years.

After Hawaii, California, New York, Minnesota, and Massachusetts rounded out the top five states with the highest life expectancy at birth overall for men and women at 2019.

The report revealed that Mississippi had the lowest life expectancy in the country, with 74.4 years, well below the national average of 78.8.

And after Mississippi, followed by West Virginia, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, South Carolina and Ohio with the lowest life expectancies. All of these states were below the national median for life expectancy.

The report from the National Center for Health Statistics, which relies on CDC, classified the 21 states and the District of Columbia using state-specific population and death figures for 2018. Reflected that life expectancy at birth for the entire United States that year was 74.8 years: an increase of 0.1 years from the previous year.

The figures of 2019 are from a time period prior to the COVID-pandemic 19, which affected the nation’s average life expectancy.
