A video shows an Iranian man smiling as he walked through the streets carrying the severed head of his wife of 17 years, whom he beheaded in an “honor killing,” according to one report.

The gruesome footage shows Sajjad Heydari walking through a neighborhood in Ahvaz, a city in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, on Saturday with Mona Heydari’s head in one hand and a blade in the other , reported East2West News.

Mona, who was also Sajjad’s cousin, was forced to marry him when she was only 12 years, according to the Women’s Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran.

Mona reportedly suffered domestic abuse , but they pressured her to stay with her husband for the sake of her 3-year-old son, despite the fact that she had expressed her desire to divorce the man.

Teenager eventually escaped to Turkey, but returned after finding it difficult to live alone in another country , reported the media outlet.

A few days later, Sajjad and his brother allegedly tied his hands and cut off his head.

Her body was dumped before her husband paraded her head through the streets.

The police officer said that the motive for the murder was “family differences”.

According to reports, the two men were arrested, but it was not clear what punishment they are likely to face.

Abbas Hosseini-Pouya, attorney general of Ahvaz, the provincial capital of Khuzestan said Mona had sent photos of herself to her husband from Turkey that had fueled her “negative emotions,” according to Ira n International.

The women’s committee said that “not a week goes by without some form of honor killing making headlines.

The failure of the clerical regime to criminalize these killings has led to a catastrophic rise in honor killings.

“In a report published in 2015, the state daily Sharq wrote that an annual average of 375 to 450 honor killings”, said the resistance council.

“The catastrophic increase in honor killings in Iran is rooted in misogyny and the patriarchal culture institutionalized in laws and society”, continued the group.

“Although the father, the brother or the husband wield the knife, sickle or rifle, murders have their roots in the medieval perspective of the ruling regime. The laws of the clerical regime officially state that women are second-degree citizens owned by men,” he added. Meanwhile, the state news agency Rokna was shut down after it published the shocking video.
