They estimate that 8,759 people were victims of mutilation, dismemberment and other “atrocities” in Mexico in 2021

At least 8,759 people were “victims of atrocities” during 2021 in Mexico, according to a report presented by the organization Causa en Común.

The report “Horror gallery: atrocities recorded in the media” presents the findings based on the tracking of journalistic information, in which they were counted each month on average 445 atrocities.

The document reports the finding of 4,191 press releases on events “that can be classified as atrocities”.

In 2020, the first year in which Common Cause carried out this report, 6 were recorded.373 victims of atrocities.

The main atrocities identified in 2021 were torture, with one,151; mutilation, dismemberment and destruction of corpses, 837; clandestine graves, 554; massacres, 529; murder of women with extreme cruelty, 398, and murder of girls, boys and adolescents, 279.

The states of the country where the most atrocities were recorded were Guanajuato with 586, Jalisco with 374, Michoacan with 307, Chihuahua with 259 and Veracruz with 307.

The states with the lowest number of records of atrocities were Durango, Coahuila, Yucatán, Baja California Sur and Aguascalientes.

“As with the rest of the entities, there will be an undetermined number of atrocities that were not recorded by the press,” explained Causa en Común in a statement.

September and November were the two m eses of 2021 which recorded a significantly higher number of victims, with 1,490 and 1,398 respectively.

In The study defines “atrocity” as the “intentional use of physical force to cause death, laceration or extreme mistreatment; to cause the death of a high number of people; to cause the death of vulnerable persons or of political interest, and/or to provoke terror”.

Mexico recorded in 2022 another violent year, with 09,308 intentional homicides and different massacres that hit the country.

According to data from the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection ( SSPC), Mexico registered 09,308 intentional homicides last year, 3.6% less than 34,556 murders of 2020.
