The president of the UEFA, the Slovenian Aleksander Ceferin, once again criticized the possible holding of the World Cup every two years, as proposed by FIFA, and considered it “ a populist project that will destroy football”.

“It will never see the light of day (a World Cup every two years ) because is total and complete nonsense. It is a populist project that will destroy football. It collides with all the principles of our sport, of the Olympic Games… And it is not only bad for Europe”, he said in an interview with Jornal de Dimanche (JDD) Ceferin.

The manager asserted that the players already “have a very high match load” and a big tournament every summer will hurt them. It will also be harmful -he added- for women’s soccer, since it will reduce its visibility.

In case FIFA wants continue with his project, Ceferin assured that Europe and South America (Conmebol) will get off the boat and their players will not participate. “Without us, it won’t be the same World Cup.”

The leader argued that if there is a gap between UEFA and the rest of the federations, it is because Europe invests “in the academies and infrastructures, even in the smallest countries“.

Regarding the Super League project, in which clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are still following, Ceferin was once again on the attack. “Just like those who think that the earth is flat, they think that the Super League still exists “, he referred.

“ It will not see the light of day, at least in the next ten years. Nobody likes it, apart from those who think that football should revolve around money”, he predicted.
