Stockton fire captain dies after being shot while fighting fire

The community of Stockton, California is mourning the loss of the Captain of the Stockton Fire Department, Vidal “Max” Fortuna, who was shot to death this Monday morning while responding to a dumpster fire.

According to ABC, around 4: 45 am, fire crews responded to a dumpster fire near Aurora and Washington streets, nearly 15 Minutes later, Stockton Police responded to a new call reporting a firefighter shot.

Due to the seriousness of the injury, the other firefighters administered first aid before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he died some time later.

Officers detained a man from 67 years on the scene. A firearm was also recovered in the area. For now, homicide detectives are now working to determine what led up to the shooting.

“Was a senseless act of violence that was committed against our fire captain, who was just doing his job “, said Joe Silva, spokesman for the Police of Stockton.

Following the tragedy, Stockton Fire Chief Richard Edwards honored his colleague, “Captain Fortuna served the City of Stockton for 50 years old and leaves behind his wife and two adult children”.
