DAI: the device that gives Christian Eriksen a chance to play football again

Christian Eriksen is back on a football pitch after 7 months in which he fainted in the middle of a Euro group stage match 2020.

The Danish player signed with Brentford until the end of the season and it is thanks to the ICD device (Implantable Automatic Defibrillator) that he carries in his body to control your heart rhythm.

The defibrillator is responsible for controlling the heart rhythm and detecting a malignant arrhythmia. When he perceives it, he acts automatically. You can do it in two ways: with a stimulation that increases the rhythm with which the arrhythmia is stopped, or in a more serious and extreme case with an electric shock.

The device Eriksen uses is called a subcutaneous ICD, which is the least aggressive because it does not touch the veins and is easier to manipulate.

“The subcutaneous does not reach the heart, it stays in the chest wall, since it does not go through the vein it is easier to remove and the risk of infection is lower. The battery lasts less than the others, 5 or 6 years. If it is not subcutaneous it can last 11 years. The defibrillator ‘hears’ what is happening to the heart. This device detects more serious arrhythmias and protects one 99 percent”, said Ignacio Fernández Lozano, head of arrhythmias at Hospital Puerta de Hierro (Madrid) in an interview for Marca

The doctor indicated that the ICD is worn under the left clavicle and that although it is not free of contacts, in soccer there will be no damage from a ball or a contact, so you can play without problems.
