A earthquake of 6.2 magnitude had its epicenter about 800.1 miles west-northwest of Pangai, Tonga, said the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake, which had a depth of 14.5 km, according to the USGS, follows the massive volcanic eruption in the same region of the Pacific of 15 January, which was described by scientists as “the strongest eruption since Krakatoa of 1883”.
Tonga is still recovering from the aftermath of the volcano. Emergency services transported clean water to the island last week.
The island group is located between the main island of Tongatapu in the south and the Vava’u island group in the north.
Satellite photos show that Tonga’s green areas have turned brown and houses have collapsed.
Meanwhile, the Pago Pago National Weather Service tweeted that based on available data, there is currently no tsunami threat to American Samoa due to the earthquake.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), there is a low probability of deaths and economic losses related to the tremors.
There is also a low probability of casualties and damage.
There were no immediate reports that the quake was felt in Tonga or neighboring Fiji. i.
The area has seen daily seismic activity since Tonga’s Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai erupted earlier this month.
The Australian government said its ship HMAS Adelaide had completed its 2 humanitarian voyage,49 miles from Brisbane.
He said in a statement: “We appreciate the government’s decision of Tonga for allowing HMAS Adelaide to dock and unload humanitarian and medical supplies, and the high priority it has placed on Covid safety throughout the recovery process. “The ship is conducting a completely contactless delivery of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief supplies.”
