Luísa Sonza defends her music

The 2020 was not easy for Luísa Sonza.

“In 2020 I suffered a lot with the people who wanted to control my life and my relationship ”, said the artist from her home in Sao Paulo. “I was married at the time and people attacked me in the streets, they called me a prostitute and stuff; It was a very difficult year”.

It was said on social networks that Luísa had married Whindersson Nunes, the most popular youtuber in Brazil, out of interest. In her defense, she claimed that she earned the same or more money than he did. And he wasn’t lying. The 23-year-old performer is one of the most recognized artists in her country, with many millions of followers on her social networks and with a schedule of dozens of concerts every month .

So to make fun of his detractors , in 2021 premiered “Doce 22”, which in Spanish means “Sweets 22”.

“It was like a relief”, he said. “The song with which it begins, ‘Intere$$eira’ [Interesada] is about the people who talked about me”. Luísa, who She began her career at the age of 7. She attributes this situation to the sexism and machismo that exists in Brazil, especially against female performers like her. “ The girls [cantantes] are very successful, but there is also a lot of sexism,” she said of her experience and that of Anitta, another Brazilian pop music superstar. “There is a lot of resistance [hacia nuestro éxito]”.

The artist was the vocalist of a band that entertained weddings for ten years, and four years ago she started to upload their own versions of well-known songs to their YouTube channel; there her fans “discovered” her. When he signed his first contract with a record label, he began to write his own songs, but he had a hard time convincing the audience that he had his own talent, and that he was not only a cover artist.

Yes, it was very difficult”, he said. “But I analyzed how people behaved on the internet and started making strategies to make people believe that I am a real singer […] After three years I was able to convince them that I had my own identity, and I think that that is my greatest success”.

Currently promotes “Anaconda”, a song from ‘Doce 22″ that she performs together with Mariah Angeliq, an American singer of Puerto Rican descent.

This year he plans to come to work in the United States and also hopes to record more in English and Spanish, because it has already been more than proven that he does well in Portuguese.

“Yes”, he said. “Because you can’t be the most listened to pop artist in Brazil just by being pretty; I also have to make good music”.
