López Obrador will not back down on the appointment of ambassador to Panama signaled for harassment

Despite the protests of dozens of women’s groups, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, assured that he will not reconsider his proposal of Pedro Salmerón as Ambassador of Mexico in Panama.

“No (we will reconsider), because we consider that (Salmerón) is a capable person, I already said it last time. He is one of the best historians in this country, he is the one who has written the best about Villa, about the formation of the Northern Division, I recommend his book, it is a doctoral thesis”, commented López Obrador.

The Government of Panama expressed its opinion to Mexico on Monday regarding the intention to appoint Pedro Salmerón as ambassador to that country, reported the Panamanian Foreign Ministry, but did not specify what it is.

“The position of the Panamanian Foreign Ministry has already been stated, the Mexican Foreign Ministry is aware from the moment we were notified of this designation,” he told journalists the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Panama, Erika Mouynes.

Pedro Agustín Salmerón Sanginés, Ph.D. History by the National Autonomous University of Mexico, has accusations of sexual harassment by ITAM students, where he was a professor, and later, when the accusations were revealed, he resigned.

Wednesday, in National Palace, López Obrador said that the response from the Panamanian Foreign Ministry took him by surprise.

“I don’t know what they are proposing. No, that is a procedure, the request has not been sent yet, it caught my attention that they are already responding. Of course, first it is the approval and then it goes to the Senate, but it is a procedure,” he said.

López Obrador said that if there are complaints in the public ministry he will withdraw his support for Salmerón.

“So, I’m not willing to give up on those things. Now, if there is a trial, if there is evidence and he is in the public ministry, he is in the judge, he is accused, well, how are we going to defend him, in no way, ”he added.
