Man in police custody is shot to death in the ER after grabbing an officer's gun

An unidentified male was taken to the emergency room at Duke University Hospital, due to an unspecified medical condition, after being detained by the Department of Durham Police, authorities said.

It produced a struggle, when the detainee tried to take an officer’s weapon guarding him.

Another University police officer of Duke responded to the scene and fatally shot the man, Duke officials reported.

The hospital staff immediately began treating the man, but could not save him.

The authorities are notifying his family, a hospital spokesman said.

The Durham police officer also f He was treated for unspecified injuries after the shooting, but has since been released.

No one else was injured.

Authorities have not confirmed how many times the man was shot or why he was in custody at the emergency department on Friday night.

Officials from the State Bureau of Investigation were on the scene beginning an investigation into the deadly altercation early Saturday morning.

Both officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the shooting, but no footage has yet been released. Investigators also identified several witnesses.

Hospital operations continued as scheduled overnight, but were curtailed to accommodate the investigation.

Duke, a premier school located on a sprawling campus in Durham, employs both police and security officers.

University System Police Officers are assigned to and function as City Officers.

The man shot to death Friday night was the third killed by police in the area during the week.

A man was killed by two Durham officers on Wednesday morning when he used a glass bottle to attack a Circle K employee and then tried to harm himself, authorities said.

Raleigh police fired fatally killed another man Tuesday along the Interstate 440 after he crashed his car.

The authorities claim that they received calls that he was intoxicated and reported that he threw a knife at them. Family and friends identified the man as Daniel Turcios, but denied that he consumed alcohol.
