A school exercise in a high school in the state of New York aroused controversy for including the mention of an “ugly Mexican” next to an “American cute”, although the central school agency has already removed the teacher.
The exercise was part of a Spanish language course for a public secondary school (11-14 years), and students had to translate several sentences into Spanish to learn how to use pronouns and adjectives, as well as “tú” and “usted”.
Although most of the sentences were aseptic, one of them had to be translated from English into Spanish as “You are an ugly Mexican”, and below “You are a cute American”; a third said “You Spaniards are tall and blond”.
The Williamsville Central School District (superior educational body) went to qualify the exercise as “unacceptable” and clarified that “it will not tolerate any derogatory material with our students, families, cultures or beliefs”, but refused to identify the teacher or clarify whether he will be sanctioned.
“We are taking care of this problem to make sure it doesn’t happen again ”, since the exercise in question “does not meet our requirements and will be treated as it should be”, without further clarification.
The district thus responds to the numerous criticisms received from the parents of students, primarily those of Hispanic or mixed origin, when viewing a copy of the school exercise.
Williamsville is a town in the suburb of Buffalo, very close to Niagara Falls; in the census of Buffalo, there is a 14% of the population that is Latino or Hispanic, together with the 47% of whites and the 36% of blacks.
