For Democratic Senator Bob Menéndez (New Jersey), Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations, Protection for undocumented immigrants is not a dead issue in Congress.
The Latino senator affirmed that the ‘Build Back Better’ (BBB) agenda will move forward, despite the stalemate caused by Senator Joe Manchin’s (West Virginia) decision, stating in December that he would not support the $1 bill. 75 billions of dollars.
He also assured that the plan that would be promoted it could be the Registration Law, which would allow undocumented immigrants to apply for the ‘green card’, the first path to citizenship.
“That is a work in progress,” Senator Menéndez told journalist Pablo Manríquez of Latino Rebels. “Assuming we move forward with Build Back Better, it will be as broad as possible. It could be the Registry (Law), but it could be something else.”
However, the Senate does not have the BBB agenda as a priority at this time, in the midst of the battle over electoral laws and the possible end of ‘filibuster’ or filibustering, so that Democrats manage to pass these reforms on the way to the elections in November this year.
Despite Menéndez’s statements, the journalist Manríquez indicated that he asked half a dozen congressmen and advisers to legislators , who did not see a promising future for immigration reform.
An independent immigration advisor, Karla Estrada, believed that any immigration change will not occur in this presidential term or the next.
In December, Senate MP Elizabeth MacDonough rejected plan C or ‘parole’ of the Democrats to protect undocumented immigrants, but the stagnation of the BBB agenda ended up finishing off the possibility of a plan migration in the short term.
