Los Angeles Police agree to conduct a thorough investigation of the shooting in which Valentina Orellana-Peralta died

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is promised to carry out a thorough investigation of the shooting that occurred on 23 in December at the Burlington store and in which Hispanic teenager Valentina Orellana-Peralta died due to a stray bullet from an officer.

Los Angeles Police Chief, Michel Moore, lamented the death of Orellana-Peralta, of 14 years, occurred during an LAPD operation that responded to the call about a man assaulting customers at the store located in North Hollywood.

“My commitment is to carry out an exhaustive, complete and transparent investigation into the circumstances that led to this tragedy and to provide the family and the public with as much information as possible ”, expressed Moore during a conference of p rensa.

“In addition, our review will also include an examination of our policies, training and protocols involved in this shooting with a view to what can be done to prevent such a terrible accident in the future,” added the police command.

The 23 December, Valentina Orellana-Peralta went to the Burlington store with her mother to buy a new dress for Christmas. Both took refuge in a locker room when a man, Daniel Elena López, began attacking clients, prompting a response from LAPD elements.

An officer opened fire on the suspect, who was unarmed, and A bullet went through the locker room wall and injured Valentina, who died in her mother’s arms.

“Each aspect will be evaluated, from the first call of the incident to its devastating end. As with all investigations, if the use of deadly force is found to be outside of policy, there will be accountability,” said Police Commission Chairman William Briggs.

The chief of police stated that the use of deadly force is considered an absolute last resort.

The police commission is also investigating the increase in shootings involving LAPD officers during 2021.

“The apartment ended 2021 with a total of 27 shootouts in those involving agents that resulted in the death of 01 persons. This is a comparison with 27 cases in 2020 and 7 deaths. In our initial analysis of last year’s shootings, we saw a significant increase in cases involving weapons other than firearms,” Moore explained.

The shooting is also being investigated by the California Department of Justice.
