The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln departed this week from San Diego, California, under the command of Captain Amy Bauernschmidt, who made history by becoming the first woman to direct a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the United States Navy.
According to information released by CBS 8 in San Diego, Bauernschmidt served as first officer of the Abraham Lincoln of 2016 to 2019 and took over from Captain Walt Slaughter during a ceremony last August.

The aircraft carrier was deployed on Monday from North Island Naval Air Base as part of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group.

Bauernschmidt held formerly the post of Commander of the Maritime Attack Helicopter Squadron 70 and the San Diego amphibious transport dock.
The aircraft carrier battle group is made up of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln from Nimitz-class, Embarked Aviation Unit 9, the missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay and the missile destroyers USS Fitzgerald, USS Gridley, USS Sampson and USS Spruance, belonging to the Destroyer Squadron 21.
The first women to serve in the Navy were nurses in the early 20th century and the first large-scale enlistment d e women occurred during World War II
The Navy designated the first female aviator in 1974 and the women were first assigned to a combat ship, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, in 1994.
