Arby’s is one of the most popular fast food chains in the United States. The next time you go to one of their restaurants you may want to think twice about ordering a roast beef sandwich if you are trying to stay healthy.

In addition to the heavy calorie load, the half pound roast beef and cheddar sandwich has too much salt . Contains: 740 calories; 39 g fat, including 14 g of saturated fat and 2 g of trans fat; 2, 530 mg sodium ; 52 g of carbohydrates, with 2 g of fiber and 9 g of sugar; and 49 g of protein.

WHO recommends that adults consume less than 2, 000 mg of sodium per day , equivalent to 5g of salt (just under a teaspoon). The Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest a limit of 2, 300 mg of sodium per day.

For people with high blood pressure, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a ideal limit of no more than 1, 500 mg of sodium.

Excessive sodium intake can negatively affect your health. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that the main benefit of reducing salt intake is the corresponding reduction in high blood pressure .

High amounts of sodium can cause high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. It can also cause calcium losses and affect bone health.

On the other hand, saturated fats tend to increase the levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) in the blood. Mayo Clinic notes that high cholesterol levels can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The intake of trans fats can have harmful effects on health even in small amounts. The Harvard School of Public Health notes that trans fats are the worst type of fat for the heart, blood vessels, and the rest of the body because they increase bad cholesterol and reduce good cholesterol (HDL); create inflammation; and contribute to insulin resistance.
