An alleged vehicle thief was charged this Monday with the murder of a father of three who tried to prevent him from stealing his car on 21 December in the Covina neighborhood, in the city of Los Angeles.
Trevor Howard Thompson, 34 years old and resident of Glendora , faces charges of murder, attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, attempted carjacking, plus other charges, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office George Gascón .
According to investigators, Thompson attempted to open a BMW car parked in Covina when several neighborhood residents confronted him. He later tried to steal another vehicle and attacked a man.
Joey Manuel Casias, of 38 years, attempted to intervene in the fighting, and reports indicated that Thompson opened fire against the man he was fighting and also shot Casias, fatally injuring him .
Thompson was arrested the next day after allegedly holding a shootout with the police in a prolonged confrontation.
“This is an especially heartbreaking incident, as Mr. Cassias was simply acting like a good Samaritan. As we seek to ensure accountability, we will also make all possible services available to victims and their families, ”Gascón said.
Thompson is in custody at the Central Jail for Men , in Los Angeles, and a $ 5 bond was set , 215, 000 dollars.
Casias was the father of three children and served as a UPS employee for 19 years .
The members Joey Manuel Casias was described by his family as a devoted father and a great neighbor. They mentioned that they had plans to enjoy the holidays with a visit to Disneyland.
