Listeria Sprout Packaged Salads Recall; three deaths are reported

Before Listeria outbreaks related to fresh salads packaged in the United States, Fresh Express and Dole Fresh are recalling certain varieties of their products. Three people died between the two outbreaks investigated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In the Listeria outbreak related to Fresh Express in eight states (Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia) Ten infected people hospitalized and one death have been reported.

In the Listeria outbreak related to Dole Fresh, sixteen people have been reported infected in thirteen states (including Texas, Iowa, and Ohio). Twelve infected people have required hospitalization and two deaths are reported.

Fresh Express product recall includes all expiration dates with Z codes 324 to Z 350. Brands include: Fresh Express, Bowl & Basket, Giant Eagle, Little Salad Bar, Marketside, O Organics, Signature Farms, Simply Nature, Weis Fresh from the Field and Wellsley Farms Organic .

Recalled Dole Fresh products have “best used” dates. before ”from 30 / 10 / 21 until the 08/01 / 22 . Brands include Ahold, Dole, Kroger, Lidl, Little Salad Bar, Marketside, Naturally Better, Nature’s Promise, and Simply Nature.

The recalled Fresh Express were distributed to the Northeast and Midwest regions of the United States. Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. Canadian distribution includes the provinces of Ontario and Manitoba.

Dole Fresh salad products were distributed in Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

CDC advises people not to eat, sell or serve any recalled product.

What are the symptoms of listeria?

Listeria bacteria can cause a serious disease called invasive listeriosis when the bacteria spread beyond the intestine to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of invasive listeriosis can appear between the first and fourth week a after eating food contaminated with Listeria. Some people show symptoms from the same day or until 70 days after exposure.

The symptoms of listeriosis depend on whether the person is pregnant. Pregnant women often experience fever, fatigue, and muscle aches. Listeria can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or a life-threatening infection of the newborn.

People who are not pregnant may experience headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures, in addition to fever and pain muscular.

The infection is more likely to make pregnant women and their newborns sick, adults than 65 years or more and people with weakened immune systems.
