Faced with the new wave of infections around the world, Due to the Omicron variant, a vaccine against Covid, manufactured jointly by Argentina and Mexico, received approval from the World Health Organization (WHO ) .

According to information from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), this is the first approval of a Covid vaccine made in Latin America.

The vaccine, with the International Covid Vaccine Designation – 19 (ChAdOx1-S ), is manufactured jointly by the Argentine company mAbxience, which reproduces its active pharmaceutical ingredient, and the Mexican Laboratorios Liomont, which formulates, fills and packages the product for distribution.

Following the news, PAHO Director Carissa F. Etienne said that, “ This is an important milestone for Latin America and highlights the importance of technology transfer to increase the availability of Covid vaccines – 19 of quality in the region. ”

The AstraZeneca vaccine, produced in the region, is already used in some countries in Latin America and the Caribe, and approval under the WHO emergency use list will facilitate its acquisition and distribution through the PAHO Revolving Fund, as well and COVAX, the international mechanism to increase access to Covid vaccines – 19 worldwide.

The approval comes as the pandemic enters its third consecutive year and the region sees a steady increase in Covid cases – 19. In the last week, in America they reported more than 1, 100, 000 new Coronavirus infections , which represents an increase of 6% in cases compared to the previous week.

With this new immunization dose, the WHO list for emergency use has to date 11 vaccines. PAHO recommends that countries choose one of these, noting that they were evaluated based on international standards of quality, safety, and efficacy.
