The best mattresses for those who sleep on their backs

By: Consumer Reports

If you are looking for a new mattress and you like to sleep on your back, we have everything you need to know.

We tested more than 230 mattresses in our labs to find out which ones provided deep sleep. From those tests, we’ve come up with a list of mattresses that are great, particularly for those who sleep on their backs. We also made sure to choose the ones that provided decent side sleepers, in case you share a bed with someone who sleeps like this.

In our mouth sleepers support tests Above, we used human subjects (people!) of short and tall stature. Technicians graph 36 points along the spine using displacement sensors to measure the physical distance between the back and the mattress and thus analyze if the mattress maintains the natural curvature of the spine.

“Most of these sensors are located from the neck to the hips and form the basis of our analysis on back support,” he says. Chris Regan, who oversees mattress testing at Consumer Reports. “The data from these sensors will identify those mattresses that do not provide adequate support for the natural curvature of the spine. That lack of support is what makes you turn on the mattress trying different positions. ”

This test is combined with another test that uses hundreds of sensors on a bed to measure the pressure level where the body comes into contact with the mattress. We averaged the results of the test subjects, small and large, in order to generate a score for sleepers of average height. A mattress that offers great back support for a small person who sleeps on their back may not be useful for a considerably heavier person who sleeps in the same position.
