Ómicron Causes Record Covid-19 Numbers in Canada; with an increase of 120% in the last week
The variant Ómicron skyrocketed the number of covid cases – 19 in Canada , with the province of Quebec at the forefront of the new wave of the pandemic, medical authorities reported this Thursday.
According to the Agency of Public Health of Canada, during the last week, the average number of daily cases stood at 10, 167, which represents an increase in the 120% compared to the previous week.
Quebec, the second most populated province in the country, recorded in the last 24 hours the record number of almost 9, 400 new infections. Quebec’s previous record came on Wednesday with 6, 361 new infections.
In Montreal, the second largest city in Canada, one in five people who undergo COVID testing is positive. And the 90% of confirmed cases are of the Omicron variant .
Ontario, the economic center of the country and with the largest number of inhabitants, registered 5, 790 new positives, a new record that exceeds the previous maximum of 4, 812 cases.
But experts have pointed out that the actual figures in Quebec and Ontario are in all probability much higher because testing services are saturated and it is very difficult to get tests for check covid infections.
Canada’s chief medical officer, Theresa Tam, said in a statement that while there is still no conclusive data on the severity of the Omicron variant and given the potential impact it can have on the healthcare system, Canadians should “reduce their contacts as much as possible.”
