A Kentucky business owner whose building was collapsed by a tornado met his office cat last weekend, who survived in the rubble for nine days.

Sonny “Hoot” Gibson had given up hope that his friend feline Madix survived the storm of the 10 December in Mayfield, but then he heard a low meow as he stood near the remains of his building.

“I felt like I heard a meow, and I thought my mind was playing tricks on me, so I yelled his name and he meowed again” he said.

Gibson couldn’t locate the black cat himself, so he sought the help of some of his employees. Soon after, they located the cat, alive, in a hole below the ruins.

Madix was very hungry and thirsty, but he was unharmed. His owner decided to take him home, where he will live from now on.

“It was an incredible feeling to be able to feel him in my arms,” said Gibson. “If cats actually have nine lives, he probably used up about eight of them in that nine day period.”

“I don’t know how anyone could have survived, not just the tornado, but the destruction that accompanied it. ”

Gibson recounted that Madix’s survival story is becoming popular in Mayfield, spreading hope amid tragedy.

Mayfield was hit hard by the early December tornado that swept through countless buildings and left 76 people dead in Kentucky.
