A total of 61 people have died in Turkey in the last ten days after consuming adulterated alcohol , as reported by local media.

Most deaths were recorded in Istanbul, where 22 people died of alcohol poisoning.

The governor of Istanbul, Ali Yerlikaya, assured that more than half were foreigners.

Given the approach of the New Year holidays, the country’s police have increased controls against the groups criminals who sell illegal alcoholic beverages.

In the framework of the operation “Poison”, authorities have already seized more than 31, 100 liters of illegal alcoholic beverages in all the country.

Turkey is the fourth country in Europe with the highest alcohol taxes, after Sweden, Finland and Ireland.

The increase in the tax on alcoholic beverages, especially on raki, the national drink , has caused in recent years an increase in the production of alcohol in homes and illegal distribution. This situation has also aggravated the cases of poisoning.

In the last three months of 2020, more than a hundred people died after consuming adulterated alcohol.
