A 6.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Northern California shook a wide swath of the state shortly after noon local time, according to data from the United States Geological Survey.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 9 kilometers and more than 20 kilometers from Petrolia , an area located in Humboldt County; activated the US early warning system.
“It was slow at first, but then it really got going, ”Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal told CNN. “We haven’t had a shake like this since 2010.”
After this earthquake, moderate to strong tremors have been recorded along the California coast
The office of Emergency Services of the Governor of California indicated that monitoring with authorities in the region is maintained “to protect the communities from any secondary impact”.
So far, no injuries or deaths have been reported and only some minor damage such as falling objects.
