Prominent Panamanian trainer sentenced to 5 years in prison for doping horses

The Panamanian Jorge Navarro is a recognized character in the equestrian world . He has achieved numerous triumphs in horse racing with the animals that he trains himself . However, his story turned upside down.

Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil of the federal court in Manhattan ordered him to pay compensation of $ 25 millions of dollars to their victims, owners of horses that competed against their own.

They also gave him a sentence of five years in prison , charged with injecting their animals with illegal substances that doped them to increase their performance and with which they made millions of dollars.

“Someone who loves horses does not act the way you acted. I believe that you are an expert coach, but I also believe that at one point in your career you became greedy.

Man doped animals with pills and injections that he applied to them or asked veterinarians to do it . These are substances not approved by the United States Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) . Some of the doped animals even died after several runs .

According to The Associated Press, the man apologized between tears. His wife, children and other members of his family also cried during the trial on Friday.

Navarro confessed: “I only cared about winning. I did not think about the consequences . I just wish that I could go back in time and change the person that I became. I should have retired instead of putting my family through this. I will go to prison and be deported to a country where I have no one. ”

In August, the Panamanian pleaded guilty to a doping charge in which it involved others 34 people.

Navarro reached the 13 years to the United States, in 1987, and his stepfather led him to horse riding. Retained as coach by 12 years and his more than a thousand races earned him around 34 millions of dollars. He had permanent residence in the United States, but was never naturalized.
