LAUDS school board approved hiring of Alberto Carvalho as district superintendent

Unanimously, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board approved the hiring of Alberto Carvalho as superintendent of the second largest school district in the United States.

The employment relationship between LAUSD and Carvalho will be for four years with an annual salary of $ 440, 000 dollars for the new superintendent .

In addition to his salary, the agreement also states $ 54, 000 dollars for relocation costs, a car and a cell phone provided by LAUSD; standard retirement and vacation plan, sick time and health benefits .

From 2008, Carvalho was responsible for the public school system of Miami-Dade .

The agreement contemplates that the period of Carvalho to lead LAUSD start March 1, 2022 , but could its functions could start earlier.

Experience in the educational system

Alberto Carvalho, from 57 years, is a recognized expert in educational transformation, finance and development leadership

In 2014, he was named National Superintendent of the Year by The American Association of School Administrators.

In 2012, the Miami-Dade school system won Urban Education’s Broad Award. Currently, the Miami-Dade system has about 350, 000 students, while Los Angeles has 500, 000.

In 2018, Carvalho had agreed to lead the New York School District , the largest in the United States, which represented a triumph for then-Mayor Bill de Blasio; but a few hours later, the school leader changed his mind and resigned .

What As a teacher, Carvalho taught physics, chemistry, and calculus in Miami, and later served as assistant principal at Miami Jackson Senior High School.

Former LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner resigned in June at the end of his employment contract; the position was assumed by Megan K. Reilly on an interim basis .
