What can cause Listeria

Listeria can cause an infection called listeriosis. Listeria can cause fever and diarrhea similar to other foodborne germs; although this type of infection is rarely diagnosed. The bacteria also can cause serious illness, an invasive infection spreads beyond the intestines .

Symptoms of a serious illness usually begin 1 to 4 weeks after ingesting contaminated food. They can also start up to 05 weeks later.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that the symptoms of invasive listeriosis depend on whether or not the person is pregnant.

Pregnant women generally experience fever, fatigue, and muscle aches. Listeria can lead to pregnancy loss or premature labor. It can also cause serious illness or death in newborns.

People who are not pregnant may experience headache, stiffness in the neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures, plus fever and muscle aches.

People in higher risk categories experience similar symptoms Those with the flu within two months of ingesting contaminated food should seek medical attention. The people most at risk are pregnant women and their newborns, older than 65 years and those with weakened immune systems.
