Did they benefit Atlas in the final? This was the controversy that was lived with the goal in possible offside

Juan Chourio

The Atlas was finally able to break a drought of 70 years without a title and were crowned champions of the Liga MX after winning 1-0 against León and later winning the penalty shootout, however, there was a lot of controversy over the goal of the rojinegros after Aldo Rocha left the edge of the outside

The goal came within minute 55 after a rejected corner kick, but the ball was left to Márquez who put a cross into the area finding Rocha who, with his head, sent her to the back of the nets.

The move had to be examined by the VAR for several minutes and finally, after it was established that Rocha was behind the offside line, the goal was conceded, but there was no forceful shot that could guarantee that indeed the player was advanced.

After the questioned play, a debate was opened between those who claimed that it was offside against those who believed it was a valid goal.

Felipe Ramos Rizo, World Cup referee in Korea-Japan 2002 further increased the controversy after stating that, in his opinion, it was out of place. With the controversial goal Atlas was able to tie the aggregate to define the championship from the twelve steps, where the rojinegros won the title after winning 4-3 in the penalty shootout.
