US issues sanctions against citizens of nine countries for human rights issues

Coinciding with International Human Rights Day , and in coordinated actions with Canada and Great Britain , the United States issued financial sanctions and prohibited the granting of visas to officials, former officials and government entities from nine countries.

These measures include only an official from the Western Hemisphere, the Mexican Mario Plutarco Marín Torres, former governor of Puebla who was detained in February on charges of torture .

The three nations also joined the action of the global financial system , which vetoed the Myanmar military authorities after the coup on February 1

Sanctions include Chinese authorities, for their involvement in the repression ethnic minorities, as well as one Russian university accused of helping Korea North in raising funds through a work abroad program deemed abusive.

Also, makes ineligible officials and former officials, together with their families, from Uganda, China, Belarus, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka , to travel to the United States. According to US law, a visa cannot be granted to those implicated in “flagrant human rights violations or significant corruption.”

“We are determined to place human rights at the center of our foreign policy , and we reaffirm this commitment using all appropriate tools and authorities to attract attention and promote accountability for human rights violations, no matter where they occur, ”stated Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State.
