Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion of Mexico, assured that Ómicron will be one of the predominant variants of the COVID – 19 in the world so it could reach Mexico, “let’s take it for granted” .
“We can practically guarantee that Ómicron will end up being one of the variants of COVID – 19 predominant in the world, of course it can include Mexico, let’s take it for granted, just as it will reach the other countries of the world ”, pointed out
From the Old Palace of the City Council of Mexico City, the Mexican government strategist on the COVID pandemic – 19, noted that even though Ómicron is already found on all five continents, it has not been shown to be more virulent and transferable.
“ The Omicron variant has not demonstrated be neither more virulent nor necessary sary more transferable. It has not been identified that it causes a more serious disease and the effectiveness of the vaccines is still in force “, he commented.
Hugo López-Gatell commented that The concern of the World Health Organization (WHO) about the new variant is not due to greater virulence but to the “unequal distribution of vaccines in the world.”
The Mexican epidemiologist pointed out that the closure of borders does not stop the spread of COVID – 19 and only harms to the economies of the peoples.
“ Measures such as travel cancellations or border closures that seriously harm the well-being of the peoples have no scientific basis or. It is not a measure that can stop the spread of this variant or another ”, he argued.
Last Saturday 27 of November, through his Twitter account, López-Gatell pointed out that some data suggests that the Ómicron variant has not been shown to be more virulent.
“ Ómicron is the most recent variant of concern of SARS-CoV-2 ; some data suggest that it has higher transmissibility than previous ones. It has not been shown to be more virulent or to evade the immune response induced by vaccines, ”he said.
“Travel restrictions or border closures are not very useful measures; affect the economy and the well-being of the peoples ”, he expressed in a second message.
Mexico so far accumulates 294, 000 killed by COVID – 19 and 3.9 million infections.
