JK Rowling , the author of the “Harry Potter” books has become the latest victim of “doxxing”, a form of harassment online which consists of publicly revealing personal information about a person that until then was unknown to the public. She maintains that three actors and activists photographed themselves in front of her home last Friday, carefully positioning themselves to make sure the address was visible, and later shared those images on social media.
“I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who reported the image to @TwitterSupport. Your kindness and decency have made a huge difference to my family and to me. I would also like to thank @PoliceScotland for their support and assistance in this matter, ”said Rowling. “I beg the people who retweeted the image with the address still visible, even though they did so condemning the actions of these people, to delete it.”
Even if it is an unjustifiable and potentially dangerous violation of your privacy , she insists that she does not feel “intimidated” because by now she has received so many death threats that I could “wallpaper the house with them.” Furthermore, the author is determined not to allow this type of incident to silence her so that she stops talking about women’s rights based on sex.
Last year Rowling was involved in a strong controversy after publishing an article entitled “Creating a more equal world for menstruating people” in which she argued that certain rights of women were threatened by activism of a part of the trans collective. His position was directly related to the new legislation -such as the Gender Recognition Act 2004 of the United Kingdom- which, in their opinion, posed a great risk because they allow a person to change their gender in the eyes of the law without undergoing reassignment surgery or without taking hormonal therapy.
In summary, the writer opposes eliminating the legal definition of sex and replacing it with that of gender . The reactions to that article were immediate and she considers that the leak of her personal address is just one more proof that women are really being threatened. “Maybe – and I’m just throwing an idea out there – the best way to show that your movement is not a threat to women is to stop harassing, harassing and threatening us,” concluded JK
