The WTA would no longer play in China due to the disappearance of tennis player Peng Shuai

The disappearance for more than two weeks of the Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai , has made the Women’s Tennis Association ( WTA) pronounce on its intention to eliminate the tournaments in China because there is still no answer on the whereabouts of the athlete.

Steve Simon , President of the WTA, pointed out that they intend to withdraw all tournaments on Chinese soil after a letter sent to the ambassador of the Asian country, although in the last hours the government itself has shown some videos of the tennis player as proof of life.

“If our requests are not met, we will have no choice but to reconsider whether we will play in China again. If Peng Shuai is not safe, cannot travel or speak freely, we have no assurance that our players can be safe in that country , ”said Simon.

The WTA leader himself also asked the Chinese ambassador to the United States , to be allowed to leave the country or have access to a meeting with tennis player Peng Shuai, following the complaint made on November 2 about sexual abuse received by former Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli.

On the other hand, the Chinese government published a series of videos where tennis player Peng Shuai is supposedly seen in a restaurant accompanied by several people. This has not served to appease the complaints of the disappearance of the tennis player who, so far, has not declared to any independent media.
