The report does not indicate the size of the metal fragments that could be found in the cupcakes. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that the ingestion of metal fragments can cause injury to the consumer . These injuries may include damage to the mouth, throat, or intestine.

ADA medical specialists indicate that small, rounded items are less likely to cause complications when ingested. They point out that around the 80 percent of foreign objects will pass through the gastrointestinal tract without causing complications. However, foreign objects that have become stuck, that can damage the digestive tract, or that have toxic properties, generally need to be removed.
