Robinhood investment app hacked and information from millions of users is exposed

The investment app Robinhood reported that at the beginning of the month was affected by a data breach

that exposed the information of millions of customers , and that the criminals demanded a payment in exchange .

Through a statement, the aforementioned financial services platform indicated that the attack occurred on November 3 last, and allowed the attackers to obtain an email list of about five million people , as well as the Full names of two million more .

Would have remained exposed names, dates of birth and zip codes of a “limited number of people”, just over 300 . The “further account details” of 10 people were exposed , but no further details were given about it.

“We believe that no numbers were exposed Social Security, bank account numbers or debit card numbers and that there has been no financial loss for any customer as a result of the incident, ”added the company.

After containing the intrusion, “the unauthorized party demanded an extortion payment,” but the company did not indicate whether it complied with the demand for said payment, but did specify that it immediately notified the authorities.

After Monday’s close, Robinhood shares were down about 3% .

Attackers gained access to customer service systems by impersonating by an employee of the area by telephone. It is a technique known as “social engineering” .

“As a ‘Safety First’ company, we owe it to our clients to be transparent and act with integrity. After a diligent review, the right thing to do is to notify the entire Robinhood community about this incident, ”said Caleb Sima, Robinhood’s director of security.
