Photos: Hundreds lay flowers for the first time at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

During 100 years , the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been the heart of the Arlington National Cemetery , in Virginia .

As a sacred memorial site, is the grave of three unknown US servicemen

and connects visitors to the legacy of the United States military throughout the nation’s history.

As the opening ceremony of the Centennial Commemoration of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier begins, a sentry from the 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) performs the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, November 9, 1998.

It is the first time in 96 years that visitors are allowed to approach the Tomb , according to Karen Durham-Aguilera, executive director of the Army’s National Military Cemeteries and Arlington National Cemetery.

The rare opportunity for the public to get close to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for a few days occurs in commemoration of its centenary.
