Daniel Ortega labels the international powers as colonialists after his controversial victory in the Nicaraguan elections

One day after the presidential elections in his country, and with re-election practically guaranteed, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega attacked those “who continue with their colonialist practices.”

He did so at an event for the anniversary of the death of Commander Carlos Fonseca, one of the founders of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), a moment that he took the opportunity to defend the sovereignty of the Central American country .

“They think we are a colony and they want to dictate how we behave and they want to decide what kind of democracy we should practice,” said Ortega.

Re-election disputed

With more than 97% of the records scrutinized, the Supreme Electoral Council gives Ortega’s party, the FSLN, a broad victory with the 75, 92% of votes .

With the detention of the main opposition leaders in recent months, these elections were marked by the absence of candidates with the possibility of taking the presidency from Ortega .

The US government called the elections a “pantomime”, and several Latin American and European leaders also questioned the results.

In his intervention, Ortega rejected those questions and sent a message to the governments Europeans: “They must understand that here in Nicaragua the people rule and not the Europeans (…) the European Union has mostly fascist parliamentarians, that is why so much hatred against the peoples that they fight for independence and sovereignty. ”

The Nicaraguan president continued to criticize the United States, whose interventions, he said,“ bring only desolation and poor za. ”

“ The United States troops recently left Afghanistan and left an extremely negative situation there, after provoking during 20 years of pain, death and insecurity ”, he indicated.

Regarding the jailed opponents, Ortega referred to them as “sons of bitches of the empire.”

Ortega’s statements were produced before international observers who were allowed to enter the country.
