The president Joe Biden would be coordinating a first trilateral meeting with the presidents of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador , and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau .
The meeting would be the first between the leaders, although President Biden has maintained virtual meetings with both leaders, due to the COVID pandemic – 19.
According to a Reuters report, the meeting would be scheduled for the week of 15, but there is no official confirmation from the governments. The agency didn’t even get a response from the White House.
However, at the express question of this newspaper, the Biden Administration did not want to confirm the possibility of the meeting or any particular date.
“Nothing to confirm or announce”, said a spokesperson.
The revelation comes the same day that the Mexican president led the United Nations Security Council , where he spoke of the importance of confronting corruption and inequity to avoid armed conflicts.
This is the second trip abroad for López Obrador, who has been reluctant to world events, including the COP 26 in Glasgow, Scotland, where the Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard attended.
In this context, it would be unusual for AMLO to decide to undertake another trip abroad in a short period, while the Secretariat of Foreign Relations (SRE) does not respond gave the questions of this newspaper about the new plan.
López Obrador visited the White House in July of 2020, in the middle of the US electoral process, to meet with former president Donald Trump on the occasion of the start of the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (T-MEC or USMCA), the new version of NAFTA.
During his visit to the UN, the Mexican president did not meet with immigrants, but sent them a video message, where he spoke about the regularization of 11 million undocumented immigrants seeking President Biden, but the Democrats plan Congress contemplates only 7.1 million people for a deportation waiver and Employment Authorization .
López Obrador also said, without saying how, that he will help the US Congress pass the protection of immigrants.
L he Biden and AMLO administrations have had a dialogue on different fronts, with a constant convergence on national security and immigration. The meetings have been for the high-level dialogues on Economy and Security.
