With the sea up to his knees, the Foreign Minister of Tuvalu, a country in the Pacific at 4, 000 miles from Hawaii, gave a speech to the COP 26 in Glawgow to raise awareness about how climate change will first affect the countries in the largest ocean on Earth if immediate action is not taken .
In a suit and tie, Simon Kofe gave a speech at a lectern in the middle of the sea, thus demonstrating the country’s fight against climate change and rising sea levels . The images quickly went viral and the minister’s statements are expected to be broadcast this Tuesday at the COP 26 , which is being held in Glasgow and which brings together world leaders to reach agreements against global warming .
“ The declaration juxtaposes the COP scenario 26 with the real situations facing Tuvalu due to the impacts of climate change and sea level rise, and highlights the bold action Tuvalu is taking to address the pressing issues of human mobility in the context of climate change ”, Kofe told CNN in reference to his video.
The footage was recorded in the main islet of the capital, Funafuti .
According to CNN, Kofe’s message is added the other leaders of the countries in the Pacific, who indicate that their countries will be the first affected by the rise in sea level, which could cause millions of deaths and displaced persons in the next few years if climate action is not taken urgently .
