In Florida, the motorcycle endorsement – also known as “motorcycle approval” – allows people who already have a license to Cars extend their driving privileges towards motorcycles. This endorsement, similar to those requested for CDL commercial driver licenses , represents the Easiest way to legally operate these vehicles in the state without having to apply for a specific new license for them. According to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), the requirements to apply for this endorsement are as follows:
1. Possess a valid Florida Class E driver’s license.
2. Have completed a basic course for cyclists of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and consign the certificate of the same as proof. For this certificate to be considered, it cannot exceed one year after it was issued.
3. Visit a local FLHSMV office to apply.
4. Submit documents that serve as proof of identity.
5. Pay the corresponding fee for this procedure.
Once the application is completed, the driver receives an endorsement on the driver’s license motorcycles legally in the state . Of all the requirements, the MSF certificate is the most important because it represents the proof that the driver can operate this type of vehicle safely without hurting himself or causing harm to third parties. According to the FLHSMV, MSF courses are necessary to learn the language of motorcyclists on the road, make correct turns and attend to any emergency situation.
When a person does not possess a Class E driver’s license, the FLHSMV requires that they submit an application for a motorcycle license meeting the following requirements:
1. Be at least 16 years old and, if under 18 years, have at least a learner’s license for one year with no traffic convictions.
2. Pass the same knowledge test (written test) as for a state Class E driver’s license.
3. Complete a basic course approved by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF).
4. Provide proper identification and pay applicable fees for FLHSMV to issue motorcycle license.
Unlike the endorsement, which allows car drivers to drive a motorcycle, motorcycle licenses are exclusive to these vehicles and do not allow the holder to drive cars with it.
