HOUSTON – An officer from the Harris County Precinct 4 Police Department was fatally shot and two other officers were injured this early Saturday morning during an incident where authorities they have reported that the officers were ambushed by a Hispanic suspect in the premises of a nightclub in the north of the city.
The shooting happened around 2 o’clock: 15 am on the block 4400 of the street 45 North at the height of Crosstimbers Street.
The scene location was reported as 45 North Bar and Lounge where the officers involved were working overtime.
The police were called outside the nightclub for an alleged report of theft in the parking lot, according to the Police from Houston.
While two of the officers were trying to arrest a possible suspect, a second suspect appeared from behind the officers armed with a rifle and shot them several times, according to the Assistant Chief of Police Houston, James Jones.
Both officers were hit and it was one of them who died.
A third officer heard the shots and came to support and was also shot by the suspect.
Among the wounded, one officer was shot in the back, another in the foot and the one who was mortally wounded has been identified as Kareem Atkins, from 30 years.
The other two injured were identified as Darrell Garrett, from 28 years, and Juqaim Barthen, of 29 years.
The officer who died has just returned to work after being absent for the birth of his baby. After the tragedy, he leaves his wife and baby, barely two months old.
A suspect was arrested at the scene, but the Hispanic man who shot managed to escape.
The Police said that the suspect who shot is a Hispanic man among the 20 and 25 year old who wore jeans and a white shirt.
