Two weeks after the initial eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, on La Palma, one of the cones in the northern sector of the summit collapsed causing the lava to now come out faster than before. However, experts consider that it is a common fact and that they do not foresee that the river of fire will affect more homes.

The rupture of the cone caused a new casting that quickly joined with the original that occurred on 11 of September. The island’s seismologists indicated to the Cadena SER that this event was produced by a sudden increase in volcanic activity below the summit .

The new flow makes the river of lava flow faster towards the sea, where the delta produced by the contact between the magma and the sea already covers approximately 30 hectares and continues to grow over the days .

Experts indicate that, although the pouring after the rupture joined with the first, they do not rule out the opening of new mouths due to the deformation of the cone that could threaten areas that had previously been classified as safe .

However, Carmen López, the person in charge of volcanic surveillance at the National Geographic Institute (IGN), indicated that the activity of the Cumbre Vieja has not returned to the levels recorded the last week of September, when the laundry finally reached the sea, but it did make it clear that constant and powerful explosions have been recorded below the surface on La Palma.

For his part, the president of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, visited the island to meet with the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan (Pevolca) and announced the approval of more than 200 million euros as budget to rebuild the island once the eruption has stopped.

Sánchez then met with the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres and the Cabildo de La Palma, Mariano Hernández, to manage the emergency on La Palma .

According to the latest Copernicus satellite report, the number of homes affected by lava on the island increased to 946 and others 148 are threatened during the last 24 hours, which means that in a single day 66 structures were consumed by magma. However, no injuries or fatalities have been recorded .
