Suspect in the attack on 'Big Papi' dies in car chase

A man Dominican Republic authorities believe helped orchestrate the shooting in 2019 against Red Sox legend David Ortiz was killed after a high speed chase at north of Santiago during the weekend.

Luis Alfredo Rivas Class, also known as “El Cirujano”, he died of multiple gunshot wounds on Sunday, reports the Dominican daily Listín Diario.

The car chase seemed like something out of an action movie, Listín Diario reported, as several people followed Rivas Clase, until he collided with a car that authorities said was stolen.

When Rivas Class tried escaped, his pursuers shot him and then fled the scene, the newspaper reported.

Rivas Clase was one of the fugitives in the attack against “B ig Papi ” that generated in more than a dozen arrests.

Nine suspects were arrested in the days after Ortiz was shot in the lower back at a restaurant in the Dominican Republic in June of 2019.

Police in the Dominican Republic arrested the apparent mastermind of the attack, Víctor Hugo Gómez, that same month.

Authorities have said that Ortiz was not the intended target at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo.

Rather, was a case of mistaken identity : The attackers instead planned to shoot Ortiz’s friend, Sixto David Fernández, who had been sitting at the same restaurant table.

Ortiz, ten times selected to the All-Star Game, was flown to Boston a day after the shooting and remained at the Hospit to Massachusetts General for more than six weeks.

During initial treatment in the Dominican Republic, doctors removed Ortiz’s gallbladder, as well as parts of his liver and colon.

“Big Papi will be back soon,” Ortiz had promised during his recovery at the end of July 2019.

About a month later, Ortiz launched the first ceremonial pitch at Fenway Park.
