A United States judge certifies that former President Alejandro Toledo can be extradited to Peru

A United States judge certified this Tuesday that Alejandro Toledo can be extradited to Peru to be tried for allegedly receiving bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

“The Court certifies to the Secretary of State that the evidence of criminality is sufficient to support the charges under the treaty of Peru and the US ”, concluded Judge Thomas Hixson, of California.

Now the final decision to proceed with the extradition corresponds to the secretary from USA State, Anthony Blinken.

Peru requested in 2018 the extradition of Toledo, who ruled the country between and 2006.

The former president was detained in California, USA. USA since July 2019. In March of 2020 he was placed under house arrest.

The justice of his country is investigating him for allegedly receiving a bribe of up to US $ 31 million from the Brazilian Odebrecht in exchange for favoring this construction company in the tender for a section of the Interoceanic highway during his tenure.

He is also being investigated for alleged money laundering in the case known as “Ecoteva.”

The former president has always denied these charges, for which he faces two orders of preventive detention, and claims that he is the victim of political persecution.
