There are at least 16 dead and 22 injured after a bus crash in Mexico

MEXICO CITY – At least 16 people died and others 22 were injured, six of them seriously, in a bus accident on the Sonoyta-San Luis Río Colorado highway, in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, the State Attorney’s Office reported this Thursday.

According to information from the prosecution, the traffic accident occurred early this Thursday at kilometer 39 of the Sonoyta-San highway Luis Río Colorado.

“The balance at the moment is 22 injured persons, 6 of them extremely serious and 16 pe deceased persons. The rescue continues ”, indicated the agency through its Twitter account.

An official preliminary report detailed that the events occurred at dawn, when a passenger bus ran into a trailer parked on the side of the road.

After that, the wrecked bus was hit again by another trailer that was traveling in the other lane of traffic.

The Secretary of Health in Sonora, Enrique Clausen Iberri, confirmed the bus accident through their official social networks.

“The emergency forces, the Sonoyta-SLRC Fire and Red Cross, and the Ministry of Health, are working very early on an unfortunate accident carter ”, he pointed out.

According to the prosecution, the wounded were transferred to various hospitals in the region.

The country ranks seventh worldwide and third in Latin America in deaths from road accidents, according to the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) in 2020.

It is estimated that 9 out of each 10 traffic accidents in Mexico are due to a human failure associated with speeding, distractions or alcohol, and this last factor causes up to 23, 000 annual deaths, according to official sources.
