'Take care of my children and get vaccinated!', Last request of a mother who dies of covid-19

The death of Davy Macías, a registered nurse, mother of five children, due to the Delta variant of covid – 19, has become a real tragedy for their families.

Her husband and father of her children, Daniel Macías, has been in hospital for almost three weeks, fighting for his life against the virus.

Davy died a week after giving birth to her fifth child, at seven months of pregnancy, when she was already very serious in the hospital.

“He never met his daughter or was able to touch her,” said Vong Serey, Davy’s brother, during an interview with The opinion.

In the last message Davy sent to his family She asked that her children be cared for and vaccinated.

Neither she nor her husband had been vaccinated. Her brother explained that she had not been vaccinated for her pregnancy. “The truth is, I don’t know why my brother-in-law hadn’t done it.”

Serey narrated that the tragedy of her sister and her brother-in-law originated when last July they decided to go on vacation to a beach in the south of the state and to a water park in the city of Santa Ana.

The couple Cambodian-Hispanic lives in the city of Yucaipa in San Bernardino County. She of 37 years old, she was a registered nurse who worked in the Kaiser delivery room in the city of Fontana; and he, from 39 years old, he is a middle school teacher in the city of Colton.

They wore 11 years of marriage and they are the parents of a 7-year-old boy, 4 girls of 5, 3 and 2 years old and the newborn baby. They were both born in Southern California, but Daniel is of Hispanic descent and she is from Cambodia.

“When returning from vacation at the beginning of August. The entire family began to show symptoms of covid. The children had a fever and their paternal grandparents, Daniel’s parents, were admitted to the hospital, but in a week they came out. ”

When his sister Davy with 34 weeks pregnant, she fell ill with covid, things were different. She did get really sick. Her situation worsened because they could not give her medication for her pregnancy.

According to her brother, she had not been vaccinated because she did not want to affect the baby and when she realized that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had said that it was okay for pregnant women to get vaccinated against covid, she had already fallen victim to the virus.

“She was admitted to the emergency room on August 7. Her husband, my brother-in-law, was admitted to the hospital on 12 of August , infected by the virus. ”

In the few messages of text that Davy managed to send from his bed in the hospital to his family, asked that they please take care of their children and that they get vaccinated if they had not done so. “He couldn’t talk much. I was exhausted. ”

The 18 in August, due to her deteriorating health, they caused her to give birth and gave birth to her baby, her fourth daughter and her fifth child. “It was until she gave birth that they began to give her anti-covid drugs and put her in tubes. Before that, he spent a week and a half suffering in the hospital. ”

The 26 August, his body no longer resisted and he died a victim of covid. “They told us about the hospital to tell us that he died at 5: 10 in the morning”.

“My brother-in-law is still very bad at the hospital. He is unconscious and has been intubated since 23 of August. He does not know that his wife died, even though they were two-quarters apart from each other. He has no idea that his daughter was born and we were waiting for my sister to wake up to give her a name. ”

He was taking care of Davy before to be taken to the hospital and I was sure that she would also get sick with covid. “He called the ambulance to pick her up at the house.”

Serey says that the death of her sister and seeing her brother-in-law in serious condition in the hospital has been a nightmare.

“My sister was very healthy, she had no health problems. He was a loving and charming person. Everyone who knew her liked her. He loved his children, and those of others; and I always wanted to help the community. ”

She worked throughout the pandemic and until the last day before falling ill. His brother-in-law, he said, had no health problems either. “His last words before getting him intubated were, if they haven’t been vaccinated, get vaccinated because there is a chance they will end up as me“.

Serey asked the Hispanic community to raise their prayers for his brother-in-law so that he recovers and can be with his children who will need him a lot.

Desperate for the situation, he opened an account on the GoFundMe site to raise funds for his nephews with the goal of getting $ 113, 000. “The response from the community for the children and Mr. Macías has been amazing,” he said.

“I wanted to help them in the best way and that’s why I opened the account thinking about its future ”.

They already have more than $ 80, 000 in donations.

After the experience, Serey asked the Latino community not to be afraid of the anti-covid vaccine and get vaccinated. “I know that many minorities are scared because they don’t understand what the vaccine is. I was also scared to get vaccinated. I got vaccinated just yesterday because it’s what my little sister and brother-in-law would have me do. So go get vaccinated with confidence, especially now that the Pfizer vaccine has been approved. ”

Serey got the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine , just the 31 of August. “I am an ex-military and the truth is that I had not been vaccinated, tired of so many vaccinations that they gave me when I was in the armed forces. I didn’t want one more. But after what happened with my sister and knowing that the Pfizer vaccine was already licensed, I got vaccinated. In two weeks, they give me the second dose. ”

Definitely, he said that the death of his sister and the situation of his brother-in-law have opened his eyes. “I am not going to give the covid a joke. That’s why I got vaccinated. ”

Davy’s baby was born without covid and is in good health. “We expect it to be delivered to us in a week and a half, or two weeks at the latest.”

The paternal grandparents take care of the 4 children.
