If you reside in California and are a driver, you have the duty to keep all the information corresponding to your registration with the Department of Motor Vehicles updated (DMV) of the state. This measure is necessary, especially, in cases of moving or marriage, which imply the change of address and name respectively, to be up to date with the authorities.

The change of address, necessary in those people who have moved to another address within the same state, represents a simple procedure that can be made effective in several ways, as long as the change of address form of the DMV (DMV 14):

1. Online: in this case, the applicant only needs to complete the online form provided on the official website State DMV . Upon completion, the same system will take care of sending it to the corresponding office for processing within 10 days.

2. By mail: the applicant must download the DMV form 14 and complete it. Once finished, you must send it to the address that appears on it. In case the applicant cannot download the form in PDF format, he can request it by calling 1 – 800 – 777 – 0133. The DMV will take care of getting it to your mail in about a week.

3. In person: at any of the state DMV offices, the applicant can request the printed form. Simply complete it and hand it over to a DMV official for processing, which, like an online process, can be ready within 10 days.

The DMV registration or license renewal processes are perfect opportunities to do this type of procedure . If the applicant has moved and this fact coincides with the renewal of any of these documents in the DMV offices, they can also carry out this process at the same time.

Although the DMV does not specify it in what has to do with the information about change with address, it is likely that driving with documents that are not up-to-date will end up going against the law and could end up damaging the driving record from anyone who does so due to certain penalties. If the driver is involved in an accident and has not done this procedure, the situation may be aggravated against him, running the risk of having his license suspended.
