At least 23 people have died due to the torrential rains, floods and strong winds as the remnant of Hurricane Ida passes through the northeastern United States , the majority in the state of New Jersey, according to the latest counts of the authorities collected by local media.

New York Police Chief Dermot Shea reported this morning that eight of the nine deaths have occurred “in homes and residential basements” in the Greater Manzana, to which is added a person who died after a traffic accident on the road through Central Park.
Thousands of people have had to be evacuated from areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut due to flooding that the remnants of Hurricane Ida, already downgraded to a storm, have caused in the area, with rains that the authorities have described as historic and they have set records.
The water flooded basements of buildings coming to trap people in their homes, as was the case of a young man from 22 years and his mother who died in a basement in Queens, according to channel ABC7, or of an elderly man who was in his vehicle in Passaic (New Jersey).
New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who testified Wednesday night on state of emergency , said at a news conference Thursday that US President Joe Biden has offered federal assistance to assess the damage and has called for let “money flow” as soon as possible to devastated homes and businesses.

The storms are part of the remnants of Hurricane Ida that, already degraded to a storm, has crossed the eastern part of the country since it entered the state of Mississippi and Louisiana, where it caused severe flooding and at least six dead.
In New York City, practically all subway lines were suspended after being flooded by floods and waterfalls that fell so much by the stairs of the stations and the roofs of the tunnels, incidents recorded by citizens and that today circulated on social networks.
