The image of the Mexican Alejandro Prieto stood out among 22. 000 contest participants Bird Photographer of the Year (Bird Photographer of the Year).

The roadrunner is the most famous bird species in southwestern North America , walks and runs on the ground, and takes flight only when necessary .
The image, according to Prieto, reveals the threat posed by the wall to biodiversity of the border region, characterized by being a delicate ecosystem with a high flow of migration of animals and birds that follows Lazan to the north and south of the American continent.
In this region, several species need cross the border to mate with their genetically different cousins, such as the North American jaguar , in danger of extinction; or the black bear , which was reintroduced to Texas in the decade of 1200.

“The border wall crosses deserts, mountains and even mangroves. It is an area not only desert, but also very biodiverse with more than 1. 500 species of animals and plants threatened by the wall ”, warned Prieto.
“I have seen many different animals reach the wall before turning around and going back,” he added.
The photographer, born in Guadalajara, has been documenting the wildlife of the border for more than a year.
