They warn that tropical storm Ida in the Caribbean could reach the United States as a hurricane.

Tropical storm Ida has formed in the Caribbean Sea and and may be staged as a potentially major hurricane that could hit the United States late this week or early next week.

It has not yet been determined exactly where and when the tropical storm could reach the US coastline bordering the Gulf of Mexico , and these details are expected to be better focused once the center of the system is located, perhaps later Thursday, according to CNN.

“The center of the it will pass near the Cayman Islands tonight, the Isle of Youth and western Cuba on Friday, and it will move over the southeast and center of the Gulf of Mexico on Friday night and Saturday ”, said the National Hurricane Center.

At 5 pm. ET, the storm was about 100 miles west of Negril, Jamaica. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

The National Hurricane Center indicated at the 5 pm EDT part, that the storm brings the risk of life-threatening storm surges, damaging winds and heavy rains and that that risk is increasing in parts of the northern Gulf Coast, especially along the Louisiana coast .

“There is a risk of a potentially deadly storm surge, damaging hurricane force winds and heavy rains on Sunday and Monday along the northern Gulf coast from the Florida Panhandle to the upper Texas coast, with the highest risk along the Louisiana coast ”, warned the NHC .

Environmental conditions are ripe for the development of tropical cyclones, by so the possibility of this system becoming a hurricane is high.

“Once the system moves to the Gulf of Mexico, conditions are expected to be conducive for further strengthening, and the rapid intensification is explicitly shown in the NHC forecast between 48 and 72 hours, ”the NHC said. “The NHC intensity forecast brings the system closer to the strength of a major hurricane as it approaches the northern Gulf Coast on Sunday.”

NHC and computer forecast models bring the storm anywhere from East Texas to East Louisiana, so observations still need to be continued to gain precision regarding its strength and trajectory, CNN noted.
