How to tell if your car's gas pump is failing

The fuel pump plays a fundamental role in the combustion process that is generated within the engine : it is responsible for sending the necessary flow from the gasoline tank to the injectors so that they are in charge of spraying the liquid that, mixed with the air, will start the car. So when this part is failing, the symptoms are really noticeable :

1. The most notable failure related to the fuel pump – but also to other parts of the car such as the injectors – is that the car does not start . When the pump is completely damaged, obviously there will be no reaction from the motor, but if it is just bad, it is very likely that the car will start a few times, after trying repeatedly.

2. Sudden engine acceleration, either while driving or at idle , can also be caused by problems with the car’s fuel pump. In this case, the pump may be working, but it is not working properly, affecting the flow of fuel that is pumped from the tank. Variations will affect the stability of the combustion process and these spasms will occur.

3. Noises from the engine can also be a sign of a faulty fuel pump. If these noises are present with the other symptoms, it is very likely that it is this part.

As fuel pump failures affect the starting and starting process of the engine, it will be necessary to rule out other causes, since these symptoms are not only associated with this fault . According to some experts, the poor condition of the spark plugs and the wear or breakage of the engine timing chain can also cause the car not to start. That’s not counting some problems associated with other parts of the injection system, such as the fuel injectors which, when clogged by accumulated dirt, can prevent the gear from starting .

The fuel pump, normally is submerged in the gasoline contained in the tank, an environment that provides the ideal temperature for work properly. Therefore, as a preventive measure, keeping the tank at an adequate level will prevent this part from working excessively and being damaged. If this happens, it is best to take the car to an expert who will be in charge of confirming the failure and replacing the faulty pump with a new one in the safest way.
