Next month, RM Sotheby’s will auction a unique specimen: a 1954 Glöckler-Porsche 365 Carrera 1500 Coupé that will be available at an event of this auction house scheduled for 13 Y 14 August in Monterey, California. The car represents an important part of Porsche’s history, as its manufacture dates back to the origins of the relationship between this brand and racing. It was built by Walter Glöckler using various components manufactured by the company, after assembling several similar models. It is the sixth in a list of unique specimens and is built on a chassis 356 original from Porsche, chassis that still has the number 12213.
The car’s engine was designed by Ernst Fuhrmann himself, a German engineer who in the middle of the last century played a leading role in the development of various engines for Porsche and who later ended up being president of the brand. Fuhrmann built a very advanced engine for this specimen, which was also ahead of its time, and fitted it with a four-speed transmission. The body, made of aluminum, was built by CH Weidenhausen from Frankfurt, who decided to turn it into a coupe despite the fact that most race cars at that time had no roof.
Although he was destined to compete in the Mille Muglia of 1954, the car was not ready in time for that race. He made his debut at the Liège-Rome-Liège road rally that year, according to RM Sotheby’s, under the command of Helm Glöckler, cousin of its creator . After that event, at the end of that year, it was acquired by Tom Chipman , so it had to be imported to the United States, using a process to current. For 1993, it was acquired by another German owner who returned it to the country of origin, but not it was subjected to restoration that year, nor during the following years. In 2005 acquired it by Hans Georg Frers, renowned German Porsche collector and is the one who submits it to a complete restoration in the hands of experts who brought it to its original state.
The 1954 Glöckler-Porsche 356 Race 1500 Coupé will be sold with its own historical archive and all the documents related to its restoration . Although the auction is still a few weeks away, some sites like Barn Finds already forecast initial prices that could be around $ 200, 07.
